Balancing School and Sports
All parents feel differently about their child’s school and sporting life. Some feel school must come first before anything else, while others want a future in sports for their child, so the parents push them to focus on only that. I myself have had a taste of both, and have finally found a happy medium in both my school and sporting life.
Finding a balance did not come easily to me. I have been going to school for 11 years, and have been playing sports since a very young age as well. My parents have always wanted me to put school first and I have always known the importance of a good education, but I have always also known the importance of sport. Sports allow you to let go, learn, and stay fit. One of the sports that allow me to do this is volleyball. I have been playing for a long time and it took a while, but I have discovered how to balance practices and games with my school work. During the volleyball season I try strategies like doing as much homework as I can in class, using lunch time to work on projects, and getting to school a little earlier to work on homework. I have found all of these strategies work very well for me in order to keep up with school. Additionally I try to do as much homework the night before so I don’t have as much homework the next night. It is not always easy to use these strategies but when you work at it, they pay off.
Whether one plays a single sport, or multiple sports it is always necessary to manage your time between the sport and school. Parents may push and shove but remember it is only because they want their child to succeed.
