Home, Sweet Home
“Anybody home?” Jarrod asked as he walked in the front door
“Daddy!”Isabelle screamed in delight.
“Hello my darling,” Jarrod said softly.
“Daddy I missed you!” said Isabelle.
“What’s all that noise out there?” Susan said, “Your dinner is getting cold Isabelle.”
“Hi Susan,” Jarrod said.
“Oh! Jarrod, your home! Your home!” Susan exclaimed.
“I missed you darling, I am so glad to see you two are well.” Jarrod said joyously.
“Yes, we are doing just fine. I’m so glad your home safely. I have been hearing reports all week about the treachery out there. I couldn’t help but think of the worst, ”Susan said sombrely.
“It was a rough five months. I saw a lot,” said Jarrod, “There were times I wasn’t sure if I would make it home. All those wounded soldiers really put life into perspective. I am so glad to be back home with you two. There is nothing I am more grateful for,” Jarrod said calmly.
“Daddy, what were you doing over there?” questioned Isabelle.
“I was helping hurt soldiers get better Izzy.”
“We shouldn’t let dinner get any colder now. Let’s save story time for after.” Isabelle said abruptly.
“Dinner sounds wonderful,” Jarrod replied.
“Right then, into the dining room everyone!” Susan ordered.
“You didn’t tell her did you Susan? I thought we agreed she should know.” Jarrod said with concern.“I didn’t think she needed to. The less she knew the better. Telling her all those stories tonight was not a good idea Jarrod. She’s a girl, a young girl. She does not need to be hearing about the horrific thing happening in the world,”Susan quickly replied.
“I don’t know, Susan, I think she has a right to know. She is curious. We shouldn’t be keeping secrets from her.”
“We are not keeping secrets! We shouldn’t make her worry about you every day. She is young and should not have to go through something like this.” Susan replied swiftly.
“We will continue this in the morning,” Jarrod said, “I am tired now and would like to get to bed. Did you tuck Isabelle in?”
“Of course Jarrod, good night.”
“Susan?”Jarrod yelled. “Susan, I need to speak with you!”
“Yes I’m here,” Susan said. “What’s wrong?”
“I got a call last night, from the sergeant. He said I’m needed back immediately,” Jarrod said sadly.
“No, Jarrod, it can’t be. You just came home and now you’re going back? They can’t make you do that! They know you have a family and a commitment and-“
“I told him I couldn’t go, Susan, I am going to speak with the Sergeant in person today.”
“You told him what?” Susan said confused, “how can you do that? They won’t let you stay.”
“Don’t worry Susan, I have it figured out. I am going to volunteer myself to work at the base here. I want to be with you, with my family. You mean the world to me.”
“Oh, Jarrod! You don’t know how happy you’ve made me. Wait until Isabelle hears!”
“So you are going to tell her?” Jarrod asked.
“Yes, I am. She deserves to know, you were right. She deserves to know that her family will be together no matter what.” Susan said happily.
“That’s lovely, Susan. I must leave now to meet with the sergeant.”
“Yes Jarrod, go, please go,” Susan said joyously, tears filling her eyes.
